   Postoperative instruction after calf reduction
Postoperative instruction after calf reduction.

1. Stretching
Muscle has a tendency to contract by itself after any injury or surgery.
Stretching will make calves look longer and slimmer and can make walking easier.
If the patients don’t stretch enough or properly, posterior calf muscle will be shortened and they would have a difficulty in walking(which is a disaster and is the patient’s own responsibility).
The patients should do stretching exercise as frequent as possible for over 6 months; stretching against wall and squat.

For 2 weeks, they should do it every 30 minutes.
In stretching, the frequency is more important than actual stretching time because muscle will contract again after taking a rest of 10 to 20 minutes.
Proper stretching is essential; heel should touch the ground and legs should be straight.
After that, they can reduce the frequency like 5 times a day.
If the patient feel tight calf in the morning, that is the sign that he or she should do more stretching.

2. Compression
After liposuction and muscle resection, compression decides the result.
Calf should be wrapped tight 24/7 for more than 6 months to 2 years.
The longer and the tighter, the better.
Elastic bandage is stronger than compression stockings.

If you can’t see noticeable difference in calf within a month of surgery, you should wrap your calf tighter.
If you think your calf becomes thicker during your recovery, you should wrap your calf tighter.

In addition, patients should try to minimize swelling in calf during recovery; elevating legs over heart level and avoiding too long standing.
(walking is better than long standing.)

3. Aspiration
After removal of bulky muscle in calf, there develops empty space inside of muscle..
In that space, body fluid and blood are accumulated.
This accumulated fluid can make space occupying lesion in calf muscle and prevent shrinkage of calf.
So, it should be removed by aspiration as soon as possible.

Aspiration starts after a week of surgery and should be repeated until there is no fluid in their calf.
If you can’t stay in Korea for that long, I’ll teach you how to do the aspiration by yourself.
You should repeat the aspiration by yourself once a week for 4 to 6 weeks after going back.
Everybody including me doesn't like needle.
But, you don’t have to worry about that too much because it is very easy to do.
